Kannan has over two decades of experience in funding, investing, incubating and starting small industries. He was among the first to raise venture capital funds for the Indian IT industry way back in 1992, as part of Creditcapital Venture Fund (India) Ltd. He subsequently helped create a start-up VC Fund - the Sterling Technology & Venture Corporation (STVC).
His last corporate assignment was with Polaris Software Lab. Ltd until 2004, handling a suite of Risk Management Products for the banking and the financial services sector and rose to a position of Vice President. In this capacity, he handled M&A's, divestitures, incubations as well as internal process monitoring. He incubated a technology company, as an interim CEO, in a telecom software product development start-up, a Joint Venture of Polaris and the TeNet Group of IIT Madras.
As the founder of consultancy firm - Startup to Scaleup, Kannan has been serving as a mentor, coach, founding advisor for early stage social and tech entrepreneurs since the year 2004. He also advises family offices, incubators, accelerators and VC's on value investing.
He is a visiting faculty at IIM- Ahmedabad where he conducts courses on Private Equity and Venture Capital, while at IIM- Indore, he teaches entrepreneurship.
Kannan calls himself a ‘novice farmer’ and spends his time practicing and learning sustainable farming. He runs an alternative school near Chennai called Patshala.
