We, at Gray Matters Capital, are grief-stricken by the racial tragedies and ongoing human rights injustices taking place across America. We send deepest condolences to the families and communities who have lost—and continue to lose—their loved ones to such unconscionable brutality. We also stand alongside our employees, partners, grantees and investees that are impacted by such abuses. These events are difficult to consume, digest, and internalize for all.
As an impact investor, whose origins lie in transforming systemic inequality around the world, we have a responsibility to support our communities and encourage change. We have too often witnessed the consequences of broken systems, from the lack of access to quality and affordable education to the absence of rights and resources for women and girls.
But we cannot help but feel the visceral effects of this current chapter of racism across the U.S. on a personal level, nor will we turn a blind eye when such injustice—and its fatal consequences—is happening in our own backyard.
Actions we are taking for Sustained Social and Economic Equality
We are committed to supporting our employees, partners, and local communities in pushing for sustained social and economic equality. As a first step, we have committed to:
- Provide $10,000 in grant funding to local non-profits and grassroots organizations working on the front lines to dismantle systemic racism
- Provide matching staff donations of up to $250 per person for any donation made to a non-profit, charity, and/or justice relief fund
- Provide staff with paid volunteer time off to lend their voices and support to justice reform initiatives
- Provide our teams around the world with resources on ways to combat conscious and unconscious bias in our communities and workplace
We also want to thank others in the impact investor community who are speaking up and taking part in the Black Lives Matter movement, such as Echoing Green and Case Foundation. We sincerely admire the work you are doing every day to support black lives here in America and around the world.
